The ingenuity of criminals knows no bounds – which is why it’s always important to be vigilant and protect yourself from scams.
Scams take many forms though – and ultimately there’s a cost to each and every one of us in one way or another.
Protect Yourself from Scams
Stay vigilant about scams. They may mimic government messages as a way of appearing authentic.
Search ‘scams’ on GOV.UK for information on how to recognise genuine HMRC contact. You can forward suspicious emails claiming to be from HMRC to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk and texts to 60599.
You can also access the National Cyber Security Centre’s guide on how to stay secure online and protect yourself and your business against cyber crime. Just search ‘Cyber Aware’ on GOV.UK.
Protect All of us from Fraud
As part of the Budget, the Chancellor also announced a Taxpayer Protection Taskforce. This will tackle the minority who deliberately claim money they’re not entitled to.
If you suspect fraud, please report it using the online form. Go to GOV.UK and search ‘Report fraud to HMRC’ for more information.
