Does the new plastic packaging tax affect your business? Addressing the environmental impact of the products we make and consume is becoming increasingly important. If you aren’t already you should start preparing for changes in April 2022.
Initial guidance to help businesses prepare for the new Plastic Packaging Tax is now available on GOV.UK.
Does the new Plastic Packaging Tax Affect your Business?
The new Plastic Packaging Tax will take effect from 1 April 2022. It will encourage the use of recycled rather than new plastic within plastic packaging. In turn this will stimulate increased levels of recycling and collection of plastic waste, diverting it away from landfill or incineration.
The new tax will apply to plastic packaging manufactured in, or imported into, the UK, collected from manufacturers and/or importers. It applies where the plastic used in its manufacture is less than 30% recycled.
The rate will be £200 per metric tonne of plastic packaging.
You will also need to keep records and, in most cases, register for the tax. Even if all the packaging you manufacture or import contains more than 30% recycled plastic.
Guidance on .gov.uk
The guidance provides a high-level overview of the tax. It’s designed to help manufacturers and importers of plastic packaging, and businesses that import plastic packaging (or goods contained in plastic packaging), understand:
- if they will need to register for the tax
- what records they will need to keep
- what steps they will need to take to begin preparing for the introduction of the tax in April 2022
