Covid has occupied most of the nation’s waking thoughts this year, but it hasn’t stopped other serious illness from touching so many more lives. That’s why Jones Harris receptionist Emily Swarbrick is walking 5 miles a day throughout April.
Emily’s dad was diagnosed with bowel cancer in late 2020. Thankfully, the operation to remove his huge tumour was successful and no further treatment was needed.
Having experienced the amazing care of the medical team at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, Emily decided to say thank you by raising money for Bowel Cancer UK. It’s the UK’s leading bowel cancer charity – they’re determined to save lives and improve the quality of life of everyone affected by bowel cancer.
5 Miles a Day
The charity holds its ‘Step Up for 30’ campaign each April. Fundraisers are invited to get active every day and ask people to sponsor them. Not only does it raise vital funds for research and patient support but it also helps participants to get moving!
Emily’s challenge is to walk at least 10,000 steps everyday. And it is a challenge! As a desk-based receptionist her normal step count would be somewhere more in the region of 2000 steps.
Emily says “I’ve had wind, sunshine and even hailstone… and plenty of rain! 10,000 steps is roughly 5 miles a day, so bring on the lighter nights and warmer weather.
“Everyone has been so generous, and I’ve had some lovely messages and support from the staff here at Jones Harris. I’ve already raised over 10 times my target. I was delighted to see my JustGiving page in the top 10% of fundraisers for Bowel Cancer UK last month.
